Marihiko Hara is a Kyoto-based composer and sound artist whose practice explores the subtle yet powerful relationship between sound, memory, and space. A graduate of Kyoto University’s Faculty of Education, Hara’s creative philosophy is rooted in the concept of “strength within silence”—revealing the emotional and spatial dimensions that emerge between sounds.
Working across film, contemporary dance, theatre, and installation, Hara creates immersive sonic landscapes that merge piano-centered chamber music, field recordings, and electronic textures. His works transcend conventional musical boundaries, inviting audiences into deeply atmospheric experiences where sound becomes a medium for storytelling and perception.
Alongside his solo career—including the acclaimed albums PASSION (2020) and ALL PEOPLE IS NICE (2021), released through Beat Records (Beatink)—Hara is also a member of the internationally recognized artist collective Dumb Type, contributing to its interdisciplinary exploration of performance, technology, and society.
Hara has composed music for a wide range of acclaimed productions, including Hideki Noda’s theatrical works Seisankaku Kankei and Fakespeare, the new kabuki production Noda Version: In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom, and VESSEL, a collaborative performance by Damien Jalet and Kohei Nawa. His film and television works include the score for Lee Sang-il’s Wandering (Rurō no Tsuki) and music for NHK productions such as Deaf Voice: A Sign Language Interpreter in Court and The War That Created Osamu Tezuka . He also co-wrote the theme song for NHK’s Sunday Art Gallery with Miu Sakamoto.
Beyond traditional performance contexts, Hara’s diverse collaborations span fashion, sports, and large-scale cultural events. His work includes music for JUNYA WATANABE COMME des GARÇONS, the In Memoriam segment of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Opening Ceremony, and Yuzuru Hanyu’s ice show Prequel: Before the WHITE. He has also collaborated on songwriting and arrangements with artists including Yuzu and Naotaro Moriyama, and since 2024 has served as musical director for OTOBUTAI, a concert series held at World Heritage sites across Japan.
For Lee Sang-il’s film Kokuho (National Treasure), Hara composed the evocative original score and produced the theme song “Luminance” featuring Satoru Iguchi. The work received widespread
recognition, earning him both the Best Music Award and Best Theme Song Award at the 49th Japan Academy Film Prize. His achievements have also been recognized with honors including Best Incidental Music and Best Soundtrack at MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026, the Special Award at the 67th Japan Record Awards, and the Best Music Award at the Mainichi Film Concours.
Through a unique language that exists between silence and sound, Hara continues to expand the possibilities of contemporary composition, creating works that resonate across cultures, disciplines, and artistic forms.
